Having a road trip in an international destination is an amazing and out of this world way to explore a country. You get a chance to experience it in a local way. Doing a trip by opting for self-driving has its own benefits. You have some freedom, flexibility and it’s an adventure in itself. Here are a few international destinations where you don’t need an international license and hence can opt for self-driving:
Termed as “Paradise on Earth”, imagine driving through green lush serene patches and that long never-ending smooth roads. Switzerland has many well-known routes for memorable road trips like St. Bernand Pass or St. Gotthard Pass Road. Indians are allowed to drive for up to One year if theyhave an authentic Indian driving license.
Just like Switzerland, Indian tourists can drive in France for a year with a valid Indian license. However, it is compulsory to carry a French translation of the license for which you can apply for at the Indian Embassy in France. A drive along the French Alps is worth an experience. Recommended is the short drive from the region ofSantenay to Dijon.
- UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Indian tourists are allowed to drive in the United States for a year if you hold a valid Indian license. But it is necessary that your license is in English. Otherwise, you will need to have an International Driving Permit. It’s mandatory to carry an I-94 Form since it shows your arrival date into the United States. The US has many road trips perfect routes like North Atlantic Coast route, Great River Road, or the Pacific Coast Highway.
Indians are allowed to drive in Germany with their valid Indian driving license for up to 6 months if you carry a German translation. This can be obtained from German diplomatic mission. However, it is advisable to have an International Driving Permit. This is not mandatory but can prove to be very handy as it carries translations.
Indian tourists can drive in Norway for up to three months with their Indian driving license. The drive along the route of Oslo to Bergen offers the sight of very beautiful villages, small waterfalls and it’s amazing fjords.
Australia is a land of charming surprises. In the regions of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory, Indians can drive with an Indian Driving License. However, in the Northern Territory, Indians will be allowed to drive only for three months and that too only those types of vehicles that your license allows you to drive.
- NEW ZEALAND
It is a given that the best way to experience New Zealand is by road. Indians can drive in New Zealand with their valid Indian License for a year but for that, they need to be atleast 21 years of age and should have an official translation of the driving license approved by the New Zealand Transport Agency or one of the several approved translators. And you can drive only that type of vehicle that the license will allow you to drive.
- SOUTH AFRICA
Indian tourists can drive in South Africa with a valid Indian driving license that has their name, photo, and signature. It should be written in English. However, do call and check if the rental company requires you to have an International Driving Permit. South Africa offers loads of routes surrounded by scenic beauty like the very famous drive from Cape Town to Grabouw via Villiersdorp. Another famous route is the one from Camp’s Bay to Chapman’s Peak.
