When we think of flight attendants or cabin crew, we get an image of nicely dressed people (mostly girls) who greet passengers on their way to flight and take good care of all passengers with a smile on their faces. But everything that we hear or see is not always true, sometimes reality is far away from our imaginations. We found a thread on an anonymous app in which flight attendants and cabin crew divulged their strange and shocking secrets. Here are some honest confessions of flight attendants that can change the way you think about them.
- About the food they serve…
“I would never, ever eat the food we serve and most of my colleagues don’t either.”
- And the trays on which they serve food…
“The trays don’t get cleaned as often as they should. Bring hand sanitizer.”
“Also, if you have ever spread your peanuts on your tray and eaten, or really just touched your tray at all, you have more than likely ingested baby poo. I saw more dirty diapers laid out on those trays than food. And those trays, yeah, never saw them cleaned or sanitized once.”
- About befriending people on flight…
“I’m a friendly person, but please don’t think I’m there to make small talk with you. I appreciate your friendliness, but don’t prevent me from doing the things I need to be doing.”
- On managing rude people
“When a passenger is disgustingly rude to check-in staff, they would put him in an area circled with children. Do not piss your check-in staff off, they will smile politely as they return your boarding pass and you will never know the hell that awaits you.”
- On hook-ups with other flight attendants and pilots…
“An air marshal came up to me while working in the back galley and starting talking. He asked me if we could hang out during the layover. I told him no, but then he continued to persist and said he wanted to spend the night with me. I said, ‘I’m flattered, but I’m happily married.’ He came back and said, ‘It’s OK. No one will have to find out. It’s not like your husband is here.’ That’s when I let him know, ‘Actually, he’s our pilot.’ He slunk back in his seat like the dog he was.”
- About asking passengers to switch off mobile phones….
“Mobile electronic devices won’t really bring an airplane down but they can be really annoying to pilots. Just imagine sitting in the flight deck descending to your destination and hearing the interference of a 100+ cell phones picking up a signal. I have missed a clearance or two that way.”
“My sister is a flight attendant, she says after she tells everyone to turn off all electronics, she goes to the back and pulls out her phone and starts texting.”
- Do not drink the water in the lavatories…
“Whatever you do, do not drink the water in the lav. It is bad enough to “wash” your hands in it. We sanitize the water tank at selected maintenance intervals, however parasites build tolerances to these cleaners”
- How your checked bags are really treated..
“If it says “fragile,” it’s getting thrown harder. If it’s says this side up, it’s going to be upside down. We have to fit freight and 100+ bags in a cargo pit. It has to fit how it’s going to fit…I will tell you that when we see “I heart baggage handlers” bag tags…We take special care of your shit.”
