Indian cricket has been into controversies from the start. Many of our legends made noise back in their time and some still continue to do so. Let’s take a look at ten biggest controversies involving Indian cricketers –
- Mohinder Amarnath
In 1983 when India held the trophy of World Champions, one of the reasons behind the win was Mohinder Amarnath. But when he described Indian selectors as a “bunch of jokers”, he faced a lot of criticism for this disrespectful remark.
- Navjot Singh Sidhu
Many don’t know but this ace opener has been accused of killing a Patiala resident. In what turned out to be a road rage incident, Sidhu was sentenced to three-year prison term and thus was punished for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
- Saurav Ganguly
One of the most controversial episodes in cricket was when the Prince of Bengal had a tiff with the new Indian team coach Greg Chapell, in 2005. After a long line of dissent between the two, Ganguly was removed both as the captain of Indian team as well as one day player. When Indian team had a match with South Africa at West Bengal, Bengalis ventilated their anger by cheering for the South African team.
- Harbhajan Singh
On the field, cricketing battles can actually turn severe. This is true when ace spinner Harbhajan Singh got involved in a spat with Australia’s Andrew Symonds. According to Symonds, Singh racially abused him and called him a ‘monkey’. Harbhajan along with his batting partner Sachin Tendulkar refused to the claim. But without any proof, Singh has declared Level 3 offender along with a ban on him for three matches.
- Mahendra Singh Dhoni
One of the most successful captains of Indian cricketing history, Dhoni faced the wrath of stardom when he defiantly stood up for introducing younger cricketers into them. This meant hat the team had to forego many senior players like Sehwag, this in, turn invited a lot of criticism.
- Virat Kohli
From his aggressive attitude both on and off the field, Virat Kohli attracted media attention for both good and the bad reasons. One of the most controversial episodes of his misdirected anger is when he showed a middle finger to Aussie crowd.
- Mohammad Azharuddin
Azhar is still a hot name in the list of controversial cricketers, and recently an autobiographical film was made on him. But the former captain of Indian cricket team was charged with heinous crimes like spot-fixing for which eventually a life-term ban was imposed upon him. Though later in 2006, it was revoked.
- Ajay Jadeja
Along with Mohammad Azharuddin, right-hand batsman, and right-hand medium bowler, Ajay Jadeja was charged for getting involved with a bookie. He was banned for 5 years, but it was revoked in 2003.
In 2013, a cloud of doom surrounded several Indian cricketers from the IPL Team- Rajasthan Royals, including the very successful fast bowler Sreesanth . They were arrested and later banned for a lifetime for their involvement in the spot-fixing episode. In fact, a close relative of the then BCCI’s President S. Srinivasan was also part of this scam.
- Sreesanth & Harbhajan Singh
During another IPL match in 2008, when Mumbai Indians’ team won a match against Kings XI Punjab, little did the audience know that a controversy was about to unfold. Punjab’s Harbhajan Singh slapped Mumbai’s Sreesanth on the field for showing excessive excitement. Later Harbhajan was fined along with a ban of one year.
