Indian billionaires have been hitting headlines for their success stories every now and then. But there is another aspect that makes headlines as well – charity. Many of these Billionaires and Philanthropists understand the need to give back to the charity as well for a greater good.
Amongst many Indian billionaires who give back a great part of their earnings, here are the top donors who have pledged a significant portion for human welfare on regular basis –
- Azim Premji
The chairman of Wipro, Azim Premji was the first person to join the ‘pledge club’ set up by Bill Gates and he pledged to give $16 billion to charities in 2013.
- Shiv Nadar
HCL chairman Nadar has committed for 10 percent of his wealth to be donated to charity.
- Rohini Nilekani
She is the chairperson of the foundation Arghyam that works on sanitation projects across India. She has so far donated over $40 million to the charity since 2005. She also made it to the Forbes list of ‘Heroes of Philanthropy in Asia Pacific’ among other billionaires.
- Anil Aggarwal
The founder of Vedanta Resources Corporation donated Rs 290 Cr from his earnings for charity.
- Ratan Tata
Ratan Tata is known as a person who has always contributed most of his earnings to the charities. He recently donated Rs 310 Cr for charitable work.
- Kiran-Mazumdar Shaw
Biocon chairperson Shaw has so far donated about $33 million to charities and pledged to give away 75 per cent of her wealth to charitable work after she dies.
- Anu Aga
She retired as the chairperson of Thermax in 2004 and took up social work. She donates 1 percent of her earnings to the charity.
- S D Shibulal
The former Infosys has been working for two foundations – Sarojini Damodaran Foundation and Advaith Foundation and has pledged to donate Rs 36 Cr to both of them.
- GM Rao
The chairman of group GMR has been quite active in charity and philanthropy works in India and abroad. He pledged to contribute over Rs 1540 Cr for charity for various social activities.
- Ronnie Screwvala
The founder of UTV has contributed Rs 470Cr for charity for the cause of rural empowerment.
- PNC Menon
Originally from Oman, he is the founder chairman of Sobha Developer. He has donated around Rs 270cr for charity.
