Amidst all the “hits” and “flops”, 2016 has been an exceptional year for Bollywood. A lot of movies have left an irrevocable mark on the box-office this year. Here’s our list of some of the highest-grossing Indian movies of this year with respect to their net lifetime collection (not including the overseas profit).
We can’t start our list without including the most profitable movie of the year. Inspired by a real-life story, the movie needs no introduction. The Aamir Khan starring movie even over-passed PK’s lifetime earnings with a net collection of 350 crores. And yes! This happened in the middle of the demonetization fiasco.
SourceWith earnings of more than 300 crores, Sultan became the second-highest grossing movie of the year. Needless to say, 2016 has been a year of on-screen wrestlers.
- M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story
SourceThe biopic was based on the real-life story of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and gave his fans a glimpse of his everyday struggles before he became a household name. Sushant Singh was highly praised by the critics for his effortless performance in the movie. It has already crossed the mark of 133 crores presently.
SourceAkshay Kumar proved his mettle in Airlift and gave one of the most inspiring movies of this year. It was able to earn almost 128 crores this year.
SourceRustom was also inspired by the real-life incident of K.M. Nanavati case and won over the hearts of both, critics and audience. Currently, it has lifetime earnings of 127 crores.
- Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
SourceThe multi-starrer movie was definitely a treat for Aishwarya Rai and Ranbir Kapoor fans. Written and directed by Karan Johar, the movie was released on the Diwali weekend and earned more than 113 crores this year.
- Houseful 3
SourceThe third-installment of the Houseful series left everyone laughing with a not-so-conventional comedy arc. It was able to raise around 110 crores at the box office.
SourceShivaay was one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2016. Even though it was able to raise around 100 crores, with a total budget of 105 crores – it didn’t come out to be a “hit” this year.
SourceFan was unlike any other SRK movie that we have seen so far. The movie was certainly a treat for every SRK fan and was able to raise 85 crores this year.
SourceBaaghi was one of the few action movies that did well this year. Even though the movie had a budget of 35 crores, it was able to collect around 77 crores to become one of the most profitable movies of the year.
SourceSonam Kapoor’s heartfelt performance in Neerja certainly made it one of the most remarkable movies of 2016. With a collection of 76 crores (on a budget of 20 crores), it became the first blockbuster of the year.

SourceThe story of this dysfunctional family certainly hit home and was appreciated by a majority of the audience. It was able to raise around 73 crores this year in India.
SourceThe action-packed movie was able to earn around 70 crores with a budget of 65 crores, giving an average profit to the filmmakers.
- Dear Zindagi
SourceDear Zindagi is one of those coming-of-an-age movies that you are going to remember for a long time. It was able to raise 68 crores at the box office.
SourceThe movie was based on a highly sensitive plot and gave its audience something to take back home. With a budget of 20 crores, the movie was able to earn around 66 crores at the box office and got the title of a “super hit”.
